As we grow up, we’re faced with more and more inequality as women. Between being paid less and having our own President say things like "...You know I'm automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It's like a magnet. Just kiss. I don't even wait. And when you're a star, they let you do it. You can do anything ... Grab them by the p***y. You can do anything." This is teaching young boys that it’s okay to not ask for consent. At Swarthmore College, the fraternity, “Delta Upsilon” disbanded after there were documents leaked about a “rape attic”. This is not the only case of something like this. Three women and one man were hospitalized in Milwaukee after a party at the fraternity house of “Tau Kappa Epsilon.” The fraternity brothers drew a red X on the women’s hands and a black X on men’s. Witnesses say they saw a bartender “mixing cloudy drinks”. According to CNN.com, “The third female student who went to the hospital said the fraternity sold ‘all-access’ cards that provided women with unlimited drinks. The female student said, ‘The cards were only for sale to females and you have to be hot to get one’, according to the warrant.” I believe that this is not only predatory, but also very sexist. The way that the bartender was being suspicious and girls were seen unable to walk or stand up after leaving the party.
One after another, women are being treated like objects for men to have their way with. I believe that women should be able to do whatever they want without being raped because ‘they were wearing a short skirt so they were asking for it. According to “Mashable”, one fraternity brother at the University of California Berkeley named Grant Genske “...thinks a lot about what consent means and how to change the definition of that word in his brothers’ minds. This makes him an outlier amongst fraternity men unless new efforts to educate fraternity members about sexual assault are successful.” I believe that this is a step toward helping fraternities understand how to prevent sexual assault. According to “The Guardian”, fraternity brothers are three times more likely to commit rape than other college students and girls in sororities are 74% more likely to get raped than college girls that aren’t in sororities.
Asking not to get raped at a party is not asking for much; Just mind your own business-It’s basic human rights. In the article “Greek Life” from the website Endrapeoncampus.com, "According to the National Institute of Justice, sorority membership is a "risk factor" for sexual assault — 25% of sexual assault victims surveyed were sorority members but only 14% of non-victims surveyed belonged to a sorority." A 23 year old former fraternity president named Jacob Anderson was at a party thrown by his fraternity. He was later accused of raping a 19-year-old girl. After accepting a plea deal, it was decided that Jacob would not go to jail or register as a sexual offender. Instead, he paid a $400 fine and went to counseling. The district attorney offered the plea deal because. “she believed the case would have been hard to prove.” The victim begged the judge to take the case to trial, but it was not.
Many fraternity brothers are accused of sexual assault and are not sentenced. I am not saying that all fraternity brothers rape or that all men are rapists. This topic is meant to cover the injustice of sexual assault and harassment on college campuses’.
